Apology!

To my supporters, investors, family, and friends, I want to start with an apology. You might wonder, "For what?" It's for letting the essence of capitalism obscure the original vision that led me to start this business. I wasn’t motivated to make a profit. I was bamboozled into thinking a profit was the priority.

The local jurisdiction had a certification I needed to obtain. The commonwealth had a license I needed to go get. The federal government had registrations that needed to be completed. Before I could be given permission to sell one bottle, the various government agencies had their hands in my pocket so much that breaking even was all I could think about. As a result, making the sauce became a science instead of an art. Removing the artistic nature of the process took away the joy. The removal of the joy destroyed my motivation to make more sauce. As a result, I will be adding a different spin on the business and hoping you will continue to support Crazy Jawn in 2024 as you did in 2022 and 2023.

What Have I Done?

It all began with falling in love with dirt. The feeling of seeing food grow from the ground after spending weeks of worrying about my plants as if I was mother bird waiting for her eggs to hatch. Wondering if seedlings had enough sunlight after investing time in preparing the soil, watering the soil, germinating the seeds and trying to figure out what plants grew best in the environment I lived in. After having a harvest that exceeded my expectations, I had jalapeño and cayenne peppers all over the place. I gave some to a local chef I met on Facebook. Gave away dozens more to neighbors and other people who showed an interest in my gardening. Even after giving away several dozen, I still had more than I could use. So I decided to create my own spices. I underestimated how hot dried peppers directly from the garden can be and thought I could use some to make condiments. Grabbed some tomatoes, onions, garlic and began to play around in the kitchen like a mad scientist. I never wrote down any recipes, that wasn’t for me. “That was for people who were concerned about what other people were thinking. That was for people who had much more in mind than just having fun in the kitchen…” at least that is what I was thinking at the time. When the idea of sharing my craft with the world popped into my head, what I imagined selling hot sauce would look like and what it actually turned into were DRASTICALY different. 😢
